more is lost than a place to sunbathe.

For residents of Belleair Beach, Belleair Shores and Sand Key (Clearwater Beach) on Florida's West Coast, the serious loss was that of personal safety and property protection. Within 15 short years, the beach had eroded from 80' wide to non-existent at high tide, putting lives and property in jeopardy. During the past decade, severe storms have repeatedly inundated and often destroyed ground floor waterfront residences, built when a wide beach provided protection.
Seven years of small-town politics and governmental processes were required before the $22.8 million dollar project was begun to restore the beaches within Belleair Beach and the Sand Key portion of Clearwater Beach.
Included in this massive project was renourishment - or "touching up" - of Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Shores, Redington Shores and North Redington Beach whose beaches were originally restored some years ago.
This is the story of how a beach is built. It is a story of timing, technology and triumph.
